Nadia Comăneci attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the “Nadia Comăneci” Gymnastics Hall, a project carried out by Țiriac Foundation in Otopeni.
The world-renowned gymnastics legend took part in the launch of construction works for a new space dedicated to children who wish to discover the beauty and discipline of this sport.
The story continues, from the first “perfect 10” in gymnastics to the generations of tomorrow
In the summer of 1976, the entire world watched in awe as a 14-year-old girl from Onești achieved perfection. Nadia Comăneci made history in Montreal by scoring the first “10” in the history of Olympic gymnastics, a moment that would inspire entire generations and become a lesson in hard work, dreaming big, and pushing beyond limits.
Almost half a century after that moment which forever changed the perception of perfection, Nadia’s story is being rewritten—this time in Otopeni.
As a token of gratitude for her unique legacy, Țiriac Foundation is building the Nadia Comăneci Gymnastics Hall, a place dedicated to children who want to discover the beauty and discipline of this sport.
Nadia herself was present at the start of construction, in a symbolic gesture linking the glorious past of Romanian gymnastics with its promising future.
The inauguration is scheduled for July 2026, marking exactly 50 years since the first Olympic perfect 10—an anniversary that celebrates not only a historic moment, but also a promise for generations to come.
A space for performance and big dreams
The gymnastics hall in Otopeni is designed to international standards and intended for introductory classes and training sessions for children up to the age of 12. It is a gift with dual significance: for Nadia, the symbol of perfection, and for all the children of Romania who wish to follow in her footsteps.
With a total built area of 2,837 sqm, of which 1,850 sqm are allocated to the sports hall, the facility offers exceptional conditions:
- a training area that allows the simultaneous preparation of up to 75 athletes;
- a basement level housing the sports hall, a ground floor integrating the reception and café areas designed for the comfort of children and parents, and an upper level with access to an outdoor terrace;
- modern locker rooms equipped with all necessary facilities;
- a high-clearance floor for rhythmic gymnastics and a competition floor for artistic gymnastics, both compliant with international sports accreditation standards;
- equipment for women’s and men’s gymnastics, adapted to high-performance requirements for both disciplines;
- a viewing area with approximately 50–60 seats for parents and companions to watch training sessions.
A bigger dream for children’s sport
The construction of this hall, which will bear the name of the great champion, represents a new stage in a broader project by Țiriac Foundation, dedicated to developing sports infrastructure and facilities for children.
In addition to the “Nadia Comăneci” Hall, an Olympic swimming pool in Otopeni is nearing completion, and nearby the Allianz-Țiriac Arena Ice Rink is already in operation. Further investments are also planned to complete the area’s sports infrastructure, transforming Otopeni into a true hub dedicated to youth sport.
Through these initiatives, Țiriac Foundation reaffirms its commitment to supporting children’s participation in sport, by developing modern facilities built to international standards, offering optimal conditions for introductory classes, training, and sports competitions.
